About Sunwing

Sunwing Airlines is a leisure carrier that offers Canadians more direct flights to southern destinations than any other leisure airline in the country. Flying from airports across Canada and the US, it connects travelers to more than 45 vacation spots in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and Florida.

Sunwing Airlines is part of Sunwing Travel Group, which also includes a tour operator, a destination management division, and nearly 50 all-inclusive hotels and resorts.

Sunwing's vacation business is now the official vacation division of the WestJet Group.

A paper workbook that cost time and money

The airline industry is highly regulated. Sunwing Airlines had a requirement for a 50-page, 200-question workbook that learners completed before classroom training. Instructors marked and graded it by hand, which was slow for everyone, and printing and administration made it expensive.

Sunwing saw a better way to meet its regulatory requirements. Neovation worked with Sunwing to move the workbook to a digital format with automation and multimedia, saving instructors and learners time and saving the organization its printing costs.

What changed

  • A 200-question workbook, digitized

The full workbook moved to a digital format, with the added complication that government regulatory agencies had to approve all of it.

  • Automated scoring

Automated scoring replaced the paper assessment that instructors had reviewed by hand.

  • Every question answered correctly

Learners had to be 100% compliant, answering every question correctly. They repeat only the questions they got wrong, not the whole workbook.

  • A fast rollout for reopening

When Sunwing reopened after the COVID-19 shutdowns, Neovation's LMS services team enrolled hundreds of employees in mandatory health and safety training on SmarterU, targeted by job role and location, from airline operations and inflight crews to travel agent branches, hotel operations and corporate offices.

  • Staged by return-to-work date

Training rolled out in stages to match each employee's return-to-work date, with weekly meetings and regular progress and completion reports.

The result

Since launch, the digital workbook has kept delivering for learners and instructors. With no workbook to print, Sunwing saved more than $3,000. Automated grading cut classroom time by at least one hour per session, a 10% decrease in training time.

Compliance rates rose to 100%, and failure rates on the final exam fell. Learners arrive better prepared, work at their own pace and get instant feedback, and instructors and trainees report a better experience.

The staged rollout gave Sunwing a smooth path to reopening its properties and services. Sunwing could track completions and confirm that employees had the knowledge to work safely, with a consistent message across all divisions and the leadership group, while the LMS services team handled delivery, enrollments and reporting.

What Sunwing says

  • Since switching to digital testing, our workbook compliance rates have soared to 100%. Learners can now complete the workbook from their computer at home, a computer in the office, or a mobile device, instead of having to print a paper workbook. It’s been easier and more successful for all parties involved!
