Pizza Delight Upgrades Training and Boosts Service Excellence with SmarterU

Pizza Delight reimagined its training program to accelerate onboarding, reduce costs, enhance food and service quality, and maximize employee engagement.

The Challenge

With over 70 locations and around 1,200 employees, consistent service was paramount for Pizza Delight, and their training program needed to do more. The entire program consisted of only eight courses for all staff levels, leading to extended ramp-up times and inconsistent information. Managers also needed control over the training to assign and monitor its progress. 

There was also a lack of engagement and a low priority on training, as employees weren’t interested in training. They needed a robust variety of courses and support to design a strategy to encourage employees to WANT to take training and for managers to control the training while ensuring consistent and clear information. 

Compounding the challenge, Pizza Delight was rebranding and needed its SmarterU LMS to reflect the new brand.

We wanted to give our restaurant managers the ability to control the training programs in their restaurants, so they needed the same consistent information that was easy to access online.

The Solution

The team jumped into action to make this reimagining happen. They already had SmarterU but knew they could do more by leveraging its deep functionality. 

The Pizza Delight and SmarterU teams partnered to support these big goals, working to create an effective engagement strategy, while the Pizza Delight team created courses using SmarterU’s course-building tools to support all levels of their organization. In parallel, Pizza Delight’s SmarterU portal incorporated the new brand and visual identity changes to match the corporate direction. 

All the planning and execution paid off, as the team completed several actions that directly impacted the effectiveness of the training program.

The actions included: 

  • Leveraging the SmarterU course creator to scale from 8 to 200 courses, developed in a variety of modalities for all roles in the company
  • Having a single source of truth for all training content to ensure consistent information across all restaurants
  • Driving engagement by partnering with the SmarterU team to create the “Pizza Points” game that allows employees to earn points and redeem them for swag
  • Implementation of learning plans to ensure the team was taking the correct courses, in the proper order, for their role in the organization
  • Providing managers with the tools and resources to manage the training in their restaurants and provide reporting visibility for their employees

The Results

This reimagining paid off, and the team saw the results of their hard work at all levels of the organization. They onboarded new hires more rapidly, ensuring the proper training was available at the right time, with a laser focus on specific roles. The revamped onboarding allowed for more efficient training time and, in turn, higher quality service and reduced food and labor costs.

Pizza Points were also a big hit in driving engagement. By adding bonus points for completing the training right away, everyone jumped at the opportunity to be #1 on the leaderboards and get some swag!
